Asian Paints Royale vs Birla Opus Luxury — which luxury emulsion should Delhi pick?

Both flagship luxury emulsions. Royale has decades of trust; Birla Opus is the new disruptor. Here is what actually matters when you're choosing.

If you're picking a luxury interior emulsion for a Delhi flat or villa in 2026, two names dominate the conversation: Asian Paints Royale and Birla Opus Luxury. Royale has been the default for so long that contractors quote it from memory. Birla Opus, launched 2024 by the Aditya Birla Group, has stocked dealer shelves nationwide in under two years and changed the conversation.

We stock both. Here's how customers in Rohini, Pitampura, and Shalimar Bagh actually use them, and how to pick for your own project.

Quick verdict

Both are excellent. If you're already brand-loyal to Asian Paints because of an old colour project, Royale will match. If you want comparable luxury at a slightly friendlier price, Birla Opus Luxury delivers. Below is what actually differs.

Finish and feel

Royale is famously velvety. Royale Matt gives a soft, paper-flat finish that hides minor surface imperfections; Royale Shyne adds a subtle sheen that bathes walls in light without going glossy. The Play and Neo Silver variants extend Royale into designer-effect territory — silver-fleck textures and pearl undertones that work for accent walls.

Birla Opus Luxury matches Royale's smoothness convincingly. The newer formulation feels slightly milkier when wet, but dries to a finish that is genuinely hard to tell apart in normal viewing conditions. If you're testing both, paint two A4 swatches side by side under your room's actual lighting — the differences are small and often disappear once dry.

Washability and durability

Both are tested for repeated washing. Royale's wash-fastness has been refined over many generations; Asian Paints publishes ratings for it that exceed most domestic needs. Birla Opus matches the headline ratings and adds anti-bacterial claims to its luxury tier.

Real-world: both will tolerate a damp cloth, kids' crayon, and the occasional accidental scrub. Neither is invincible — high-traffic walls (corridors, kids' rooms) benefit from a Royale Shyne or Birla Opus Luxury (washable variant) more than a flat matt.

Shade range and matching

Royale's Colour World system gives access to thousands of computer-matched shades, including pearlised and metallic effects that smaller brands can't touch. Birla Opus has rolled out a competitive tinting system that covers most everyday and trend shades, and is catching up fast on speciality finishes.

If you've already chosen a Royale shade from an interior designer's deck — stay with Royale. Shade matching across brands is unreliable for premium tinted finishes, so brand consistency matters once a colour is locked.

Pricing

Approximate price band in Delhi as of 2026, per 4 L pack (subject to change — call us for the current rate):

  • Royale Matt: ₹2,800–₹3,400
  • Royale Shyne / Aspira: ₹3,200–₹3,800
  • Royale Play / Neo Silver: ₹4,200–₹4,800 (designer effects)
  • Birla Opus Luxury Interior: ₹2,400–₹3,000 (typically ~10–15% under Royale Matt)

For a 2 BHK refresh (~14 L of emulsion), that's a real-money difference of ₹1,000–₹2,000. Not huge in the context of a full painting project — but enough to swing some homeowners.

What we recommend

Choose Royale if: you have a specific designer-chosen shade, you want speciality effects (Play, Neo Silver), or you're matching an existing Asian Paints job in another room.

Choose Birla Opus Luxury if: you're starting fresh, you want comparable quality at a slightly lower price, or you'd like to support a newer Indian brand that's investing heavily in this category.

Either way: use the same brand for primer, putty, and topcoat. Mixing systems across brands usually costs you in shade consistency.
